Why you need to be organised to be creative - From Wishful Thinking

December 10th, 2007 | Category: General, Personal Development, Creativity

Just been reading through an e-book “Time Mgmt for Creative People” By Mark McGuiness - Wishful Thinking

It is based on the premise that you must
“Be regular and orderly in your life so that you may be violent and original in your work.”
Gustave Flaubert

The E- Book covers how to:

- Prioritise work that is important not urgent
- Ring fence your most creative time (mine is the night or while jogging in the fresh air)
-Avoid the ‘Sisyphus effect’ ( result of endless to-do lists, which in turn are created by a constant stream of incoming demands.. ) of endless to-do lists. A quote - “We start the day full of enthusiasm, but by the end of it, we’ve
taken on so many new commitments that the to-do list is longer than when we started.”
-Get things done by putting them off till tomorrow (yes!)
-Get things off your mind
-Review your commitments
And provides some resources to help you get things done.

China - not settling to be the worlds widget factory

November 26th, 2007 | Category: Tech, Creativity

“The Chinese don’t get creativity, right? Sure, they can stamp out a widget, or knock off a DVD, but when it comes to imagination, they just don’t have the gene. Well, keep telling yourself that.”

In Summary - No China is not content to be the factory to the globe.. The Next Cultural Revolution - Fast Company

Lovin It - The Chinese Creative Industries - China Daily

“Even the Chinese will tell you that they’ve been good at making the next new thing, and copying the next new thing, but not imagining the next new thing. That may be about to change.”

Interesting to read about the revival and application of indigenous/cultural creativity seen in history today. Similar discussions in India. Read an article here about Patrick Dodson who has become an evangelist for Indian Creativity who says it is time to unleash it - in particular in the multimedia arena.

Dodson says, “From what I understand, most of your primary and secondary education systems are math-logic oriented with little or no input in the areas of art, music and creative expressions. This combined with an inherited commonwealth ‘blending in’ attitude stifles the growth of an individual—and thus the nation.” Read more Creativity in multimedia: Why Indias talent is underutilised here

Creativity is the sudden cessation of stupidity - Edwin Land

May 23rd, 2007 | Category: Creativity

I do not think there is anyway to know what the future media landscape will look like, it is and will continue to be in a state of flux. I bought that URL, www.estateofflux.com as I think that the fourth estate, media, will never be definable again - in flux.

Perhaps one day I will use this website to present information and research on this fact so that people can at least know where we are at each day as things change, cutting edge developments, what can we do, what can’t we do? -And why not?
There are no limits, with the internet at our fingertips, brains and creativity to dream up different ways of media visualisaton, presentation and consumption.

The web makes us smarter, saves us time, automates task that would have used huge amounts of our time previously. But we are in control of making the web smarter - pushing the boundaries for creative solutions, new ideas, innovation, quirky twists and individual insight.

There is so much speak of will there be a place for X,Y and Z with the developments of new media, maybe yes, maybe no we could spend all day making predictions based on only our own biases, assumptions and preferences.

But one thing that will never change is the dire need for creativity in society. Online, offline, everywhere.

Creativity requires the soul to let go of certainties. - Erich Fromm.
