Business Models - Pay to view news or don’t pay to view Ads?

December 13th, 2007 | Category: General

Lots of work has been around which is the business model giving competitive advantage in the new online media game - a lot of factors, both traditional i.e. content, revenue and new i.e. timeliness (fastest is first), more channels to choose , from, increased global reach.

This will static though, as soon as a news provider gets comfortable and not open to new content in demand, channels popping up that didn’t exist before and other tech and environmental developments the edge gained is likely to be lost.

There are a lot of models and iterations though - as outlined here by Professor Michael Rappa

December 13th, 2007 | Category: General

This is
“part of the news agency’s drive to provide increasingly demanding media clients with more than just text.”
A word from the Journalist..
“For the most part, we journalists don’t retain any residual claim to our own work; our publishers and station owners do. They own all our photographs, our raw tapes and our clips. And most journalists are well-aware of the fact that media companies haven’t figured out an economic structure for journalism on the Internet.”
Read an interview here with the CEO of Associated Press:
-
News is a growth industry and that it was high time to kick ‘despair’ to the curb.
-Breaking news is worth more these days than it ever was. So breaking news is a premium business.
-A balance of power that exists online, between the portals and the creators of original content.
The solution:
fairer deals to ensure that creators aren’t giving away the house, along with a willingness to adapt to the changing ways readers consume the news.

Loving the Urban Dictionary

December 13th, 2007 | Category: General

Loving the urban dictionary - dictionaries should never be static and completed! I just added a word or two today that I hope will sneak into mainstream society..

Neologism - “Practice of innovation in language,” 1800, from Fr. néologisme, from neo- + logos “word.” Meaning “new word or expression” is from 1803. Neological is attested from 1754.|

Why you need to be organised to be creative - From Wishful Thinking

December 10th, 2007 | Category: General, Personal Development, Creativity

Just been reading through an e-book “Time Mgmt for Creative People” By Mark McGuiness - Wishful Thinking

It is based on the premise that you must
“Be regular and orderly in your life so that you may be violent and original in your work.”
Gustave Flaubert

The E- Book covers how to:

- Prioritise work that is important not urgent
- Ring fence your most creative time (mine is the night or while jogging in the fresh air)
-Avoid the ‘Sisyphus effect’ ( result of endless to-do lists, which in turn are created by a constant stream of incoming demands.. ) of endless to-do lists. A quote - “We start the day full of enthusiasm, but by the end of it, we’ve
taken on so many new commitments that the to-do list is longer than when we started.”
-Get things done by putting them off till tomorrow (yes!)
-Get things off your mind
-Review your commitments
And provides some resources to help you get things done.

New media writing - An E for Academia

December 06th, 2007 | Category: Communications Crafting, New Media

I still find myself caught at times in that hideous trap of psych101 style essay writing. That kind of academic prose is so desperately dry and unreadable. I still definitely need practice, picked up a few tips here from the experts.
