Creativity is the sudden cessation of stupidity - Edwin Land

May 23rd, 2007 | Category: Creativity

I do not think there is anyway to know what the future media landscape will look like, it is and will continue to be in a state of flux. I bought that URL, www.estateofflux.com as I think that the fourth estate, media, will never be definable again - in flux.

Perhaps one day I will use this website to present information and research on this fact so that people can at least know where we are at each day as things change, cutting edge developments, what can we do, what can’t we do? -And why not?
There are no limits, with the internet at our fingertips, brains and creativity to dream up different ways of media visualisaton, presentation and consumption.

The web makes us smarter, saves us time, automates task that would have used huge amounts of our time previously. But we are in control of making the web smarter - pushing the boundaries for creative solutions, new ideas, innovation, quirky twists and individual insight.

There is so much speak of will there be a place for X,Y and Z with the developments of new media, maybe yes, maybe no we could spend all day making predictions based on only our own biases, assumptions and preferences.

But one thing that will never change is the dire need for creativity in society. Online, offline, everywhere.

Creativity requires the soul to let go of certainties. - Erich Fromm.

Hard News wins.

May 22nd, 2007 | Category: General

“The incorporation of internet categories in the Qantas awards
this year wasn’t just recognition of the growing importance of
online media, but a signal that the ‘old’ and ‘new’ media will
co-exist and interact with each other.”

Dow Jones and Dividends.

May 21st, 2007 | Category: Media Musings, Finance

There is much debate in the newspaper publishing business about whether family ownership is better than public ownership, whether a two-tiered stock structure is better than giving all shareholders the same voting rights. Here’s one thing: Dow Jones has been overpaying the dividend for years to the long-term detriment of the company and for the principle benefit of the Bancrofts. Media Awards Protest- Save the NZ journalist species from extinction

May 21st, 2007 | Category: Media Musings

I see the “Journalists protest at media awards” story is no longer avaliable on stuff. Funny that, they never used to pull stories after 3 days, nothing on Herald etc either. Had to turn to the “Blayney Chronicle” to get the NZPA Scoop.

The protest is in regards to APN’s proposed outsourcing of sub-editing to Australian “PageMasters”.

“These awards are about decent journalism and that means properly run newsrooms,” said New Zealand Herald reporter Simon Collins,

Full Winners List for the Awards Are Here

Scanning the list above you can see that there is no shortage of talent in our newsrooms, with the protest happening at the awards no doubt with an aim to protect this. Each job/ resource cut is compromising our access to the high quality media insight to which we have become accustomed to, and perhaps now take for granted here in NZ.

Post shopping self loathing - Blame your Neurons!!

May 20th, 2007 | Category: Psychological Ponderings

Microeconomic theory maintains that purchases are driven by a combination of consumer preference and price.

Neuroimaging evidence shows that distinct circuits anticipate gain and loss, product preference activated the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), while excessive prices activated the insula and deactivated the mesial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) prior to the purchase decision.

Activity from each of these regions independently predicted peoples purchases above and beyond self-reports they made.

On a random tangent - but fascinating stuff, all this going on while we are completely unaware in that shoe store. What isn’t clear though - yes, the exorbitant price of the boots activates the insula in your brain, but where is the circuit that kicks in with some inhibitory neurotransmitter that makes you put the Eftpos card back in your wallet!!

Pushing past the Dip and Achieving Personal Fulfilment (And killing the email time drain) - Read the Manifestos below!

Pushing Past The Dip.pdf
What the Romans didn’t know.pdf

Hi all…

In an effort to increase productivity and efficiency I am beginning a new personal email policy. I’ve recently realized I spend more time shuffling through my inbox and less time focused on the task at hand.

It has become an unnecessary distraction that ultimately creates longer lead times on my ever-growing ‘to do’ list. Going forward I will only be checking/responding to email at 11a and 4p on weekdays.

I will try and respond to email in a timely manner without neglecting the needs of our clients and brand identity.

If you need an immediate time-sensitive response, please don’t hesitate to call me. Phones are more fun anyways. Hopefully this new approach to email management will result in shorter lead times with more focused & creative work on my part.

Cheers & here’s to life outside of my inbox!
